Genital implant patient hopes to gain sexual function.
When he was six years old, Mohammed Abad, 43, a resident of Glasgow, Scotland, was involved in a horrific car accident resulting in the loss of his genitals.
In 2012, he was equipped with an artificial penis, though it was non-functioning at that time. A total of 119 operations later, University College London doctors now say that Abad can have sexual intercourse thanks to bionic technology.
The extended period it took to create Abad’s “bionic penis” was mostly due to the time needed to allow skin grafts from his arm to heal correctly around a pair of inflatable tubes. These tubes are embedded within the shaft of the implant.
Controlled by a mechanical switch located inside his testicles, the device allows Abad to experience an erection in only a few seconds by pulling fluid from his stomach, which fills and expands the hollow cylinders
While there have been some adjustments and complications, Abad remains optimistic about the technique and the possibility to perform sexually.
“I got out of hospital on the 10th of July and got a train back up to Scotland. I had to keep it erect for two weeks. I had to do that for it to heal, because that’s the way it works. My old penis didn’t go to waste–my surgeon used it to make my scrotum,” he said during an interview on This Morning on itv.
Abad had been married previously but did not tell his wife of his accident until their wedding day. He said he admits this was a mistake. She grew tired of waiting for a possible operation that would allow him to perform sexually and she soon left him.
Charlotte Rose, a sexual freedom advocate and sex worker has since been in contact with Abad and has offered to be his first sexual partner. She told The Sun she’s honored Abad picked her to take his virginity and that she won’t be charging him for what will be a dinner date followed by two hours of private time.

A new technology?
While many news outlets have been reporting on this procedure as new or unique, medical experts point out the technique has actually been around for decades.
Quoted by LiveScience, New York Lenox Hill Hospital urologist Dr. Elizabeth Kavaler said, “It’s not a ‘bionic penis’; it’s a penile implant. We do this all the time.”
Developed by the late urologist Dr. F. Brantley Scott in the 1970s,penile implants have been successfully used in hundreds of thousands of patients.
That, however, does not take away from the significance the procedure will have for Mohammed Abad, as well as others who suffer from damaged genitalia or erectile dysfunction. That penile implants continue to be both used as well as further refined may offer hope to the great many who may be able to experience at least partial restoration of their sexual lives.
“I have waited long enough for this—it’ll be a great start to the new year. My penis is working perfectly now so I just want to do it. I’m really excited. I can’t wait for it to finally happen,” Abad also told The Sun.
